Photographic Course and a Cathedral…

Recently I was one of three instructors taking a group of 10 students through a photographers course in Tidworth, Hampshire which was put together by Paul Morrison and Kellie Williams. The course covered a wide range of photographic subjects both technical and practicle.

After a quick ice-breaker from the instructors and each class member we started with an introduction to the SLR and it’s many lenses. Some of the students in the class had never used a digital SLR prior to attending and so this was a good interest based module to get them into the swing of things.

We then moved onto aperture and depth of field, shutter speed and capturing motion and ISO and sensor sensitivity. During each module the students had a chance to carry out a practical exercise putting their new gained knowledge to good use. The first two modules were carried out in aperture priority and shutter priority modes respectively, allowing the student to focus on the individual setting. On the third module we showed the students how the ISO effects the quality of the final image and of course the exposure. Throughout each module we touched upon correct exposure and correct composition.

The second half of the course saw all of the previous knowledge brought together with the lessons turning their attention to compositional and organizational skills when taking group shots, portraits and hometown stories for newspaper articles etc. We also discussed model release forms and copyright laws.

After a grueling second day in the classroom and behind the lens the students prepared themselves for their final exercise which was to be a 3 hour period in Salisbury City approaching the public and bringing all their taught knowledge together.

The students had 21 different photos to capture ranging from compositional shots, differential focus, to groups and portraits.

The final few hours were spent reviewing the classes images and discussing what they did right, wrong and could improve on. The course was a success showing a vast improvement in the students photographic skills and happy faces all round.

If anyone has any questions about anything concerning photography, please drop me a line or post a reply on this blog.

Below are a few shots taking the day of the course and a couple of days after the course. All were inspired by some of the sites I saw while instructing the class.

Stargazing

In light of Stargazing Live here a couple of shots of the night sky. One of them is part of the Milky Way side on.

Website and Portfolio Updates

Over the last week or so I have been working on updating my portfolio and tweaking my website part of which was adding an About me page. There are future intentions to add facebook, twitter and +1 links to the page along with breaking out my portfolio into sub categories. The future holds many exciting prospects with future photo shoots filling the diary!

Below are the portfolio shots added recently.

FIA WRC – Wales Rally GB 2011

The FIA World Rally Championship is a rallying series organised by the FIA, culminating with a Champion Driver and a Champion Manufacturer at the end of the season.

Widely regarded as the most challenging motor sport competition on the planet, drivers travel around the globe, battling it out on some of the most unforgiving terrains and enduring extreme weather conditions, to be crowned the world’s greatest driver.

Each rally follows the same format – 2 days of reconnaissance on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by Shakedown on Thursday, and 3 days of competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The rally route is made up of Special Stages – the competitive parts of the rally where drivers must race against the clock to achieve the fastest stage times, and the Road Sections which link each Stage and are part of the public highway.

There are currently 15 different countries who host a round of the WRC, with many more countries holding ‘candidate’ rallies with the hope of being included on a future calendar.

The following shots were taking at one of the later stages of Rally GB 2011 at a place called “Halfway”.

Animals

A quick trip to Folly Farm in Wales revealed a vast array of animals, each with their own characteristics and quirky attitudes. Here are a few of my favorites.

Beach Shots

Here are a few shots from a beach walk from New Hedges to Saunders Foot in South West Wales. The walk takes you past some amazing Welsh coastline and over “Private” beaches that are permanently cut off from access except when the tide is almost out.

Caldey Island

Caldey Island is a small Island off the coast of Tenby in Wales and is the home to the Cistercian Order of Monks. You can visit the Island during the day from 10am till 5pm and you are permitted to walk around the whole Island and some of the older buildings.

There have been monks living on this island on and off since 1098.

Here are a few random shots from around the Island.

Nightclub – Aiden Grimshaw – Skepta

Here are some shots from working in the nightclubs a year or so ago. Nightclub photography is what finally made me turn pro. If you are into the music and don’t mind the late nights then this is a fun and rewarding job. It’s not often you get to go to a nightclub, do the job you love, have a drink and come back with more money in your pocket than you went with!

Also included is a shot of Aiden Grimshaw and Skepta who both performed that evening.

If you would like to see more of my nightclub work, as this isn’t the best of it, please comment and I will dig some out of my archives.

Portraits – Halloween

Here are some portrait shots of people dressed up for Halloween. They were shot in one of the night clubs that I used to work at from time to time using a Sigma 24 Macro and an off camera SB-600. They were quick and simple shots that I feel are quite effective.

Summer Archives

Here are some photos that I came across while looking through my archives. They were all taken two to three summers ago in a few different locations.

The puppy was taken in Wilton in Salisbury. The merry-go-round, the boot and Sir Terry Pratchett were taken at a charity duck race that Sir Pratchett held on his land. I was lucky enough to be the photographer and grab a personal shot of him.

The hay stack and phone box were taken in two locations in Salisbury one evening when I was at a loose end.

And finaly the boats were taken not far from Newquay.
